Years: 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010
The BMW ABS unit or commonly refereed to as the Anti- lock brake Unit Has an inherent Failure directly related to this electric motor
Until now only Re-builders had access to this part but now it is available to the general public to repair the defective unit in a cost effective way
WHAT DOES THIS DO?
The electric motor is activated to pump and pressurize the braking system allowing you to stop with minimal effort,
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is an automobile safety system that allows the wheels on a motor vehicle to maintain tractive contact (TRACTION) with the road surface according to driver inputs while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up (ceasing rotation) and avoiding uncontrolled skidding. It is an automated system that uses the principles of threshold braking and cadence braking which were practiced by skillful drivers with previous generation braking systems. It does this at a much faster rate and with better control than a driver could manage.
ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and slippery surfaces; however, on loose gravel or snow-covered surfaces, ABS can significantly increase braking distance, although still improving vehicle control.
Since initial widespread use in production cars, anti-lock braking systems have been improved considerably. Recent versions not only prevent wheel lock under braking, but also electronically control the front-to-rear brake bias. This function, depending on its specific capabilities and implementation, is known as electronic brake force distribution (EBD), traction control system, emergency brake assist, or electronic stability control (ESC).
HOW DO I KNOW IF MINE IS BAD?
The typical symptoms : On these particular vehicles you will feel a lack of "Brake assist" at times until the unit completely fails
The best way to find out if it is bad is to scan for codes
Common stored fault codes:
5DF0-Hydraulic unit pump motor
5DF1-Hydraulic unit pump motor connector faulty
DIFFICULTY AND TIME ?
In most cases and with the right tools this part can be changed out in less than 2 hours and is recommended to be done by a certified mechanic !
Testing and rebuild process:
All rebuilt units are fully tested live on bench after the rebuild process, this involves rigorous conditions in a computer controlled test environment with specialized equipment applying extreme temperature and load conditions to simulate speed, steering input and brake pressure in a realistic simulation. We test every unit beyond the operating parameters of the vehicle so we know that once a unit is rebuilt it will outlast the vehicle. This is how we are able to supply an unlimited mileage 1 warranty with every BMW ABS pump motor we rebuild.
